The laboratory of human genetics (“LGH - Laboratório de Genética Humana”) of University of Madeira is a research unit created in 2001. It is equipped with infrastructures, equipment and staff with the technical competences needed for research and for service provision in the fields of Molecular Biology, cytogenetic and forensic genetics. The Laboratory provides diagnostic and susceptibility tests to certain diseases and syndromes, pre- and post-natal diagnostics through karyotype studies, parental tests and determination of maternal and paternal lineages.
Of the molecular markers that have been studied, some must be highlighted, namely those associated with the HLA system (Human Leukocyte Antigens), involved in the aetiology of several auto-immune diseases, mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome, the latter being especially important in the studying and understanding risk factors of male infertility. The activities carried out in the area of Cytogenetics have the main goal of researching the chromosomic changes that might be responsible for human abnormalities, involving not only the post-natal diagnosis, but also the pre-natal one, using peripheral blood samples and amniotic fluid.

Genes in Madeira and Coronary Disease, financed by “Intervir+ (European Regional Development Fund – FEDER)”, aiming to investigate about the genetic cause (polymorphism) of the coronary disease in Madeira Island.
