Doctorate Degree in Chemistry
The main aim of the doctorate programme in Chemistry is to contribute to the training of highly qualified technicians, with the skills to carry out research projects autonomously whether in the academic context or in other industries, namely companies where innovation and creation of new products is needed.
This cycle of studies is based on the RDT structure, human and physical, existing in the Chemistry Centre of Madeira. This Centre is a research unit supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology, that has the intervention of other research units. It comprises the creation of a high-level RDT project in an international environment. During their academic career, students should be able to produce knowledge – create, design, adapt and perform research work in the field of Chemistry, in compliance with the requirements set by quality and academic integrity patterns; Perform a significant number of original research projects that somehow contributed to the expansion of knowledge barriers, being some of them released in international publications that must be submitted to scientific arbitration; To do a critical analysis, evaluate and synthetize new and complex ideas; communicate with their peers, remaining academic community and society in general about his/her area of expertise; promote, in academic or professional contexts, technological, social and cultural progress in a knowledge-based society.
In Portugal, this cycle of studies has been recognized (Notified by letter by the Directorate-general of school administration) for career progression purposes of the teaching staff of Basic Education, 3rd cycle and Secondary Education, for the recruitment group 510.

“Chemistry begins in the stars. The stars are the source of the chemical elements. From the hundred elements that are at the center of our story, all planets, rocks, vegetation, and animals are made. We stand on the elements, we eat the elements, we are the elements. If the elements are the alphabets of chemistry, then the compounds are its plays, its poems, and its novels.” - Peter Atkins, 1940
