Doctorate Degree in Atlantic Islands: History, Heritage And Legal Institutional Framework

The cycle of studies of the “Doctorate degree in Atlantic Island – history, heritage and legal and institutional framework” is comprised of 6 semesters (3 academic years). Those who obtain 180 ECTS are awarded the title.
This cycle of studies is based on the interinstitutional cooperation between University of Madeira and Universities of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria), of La Laguna and of the Azores. This cooperation’s main aim is to contribute to the training of highly qualified technicians, with the skills to carry out research projects autonomously in the field of insular and Atlantic history, and with the ability to explore and apply their skills and knowledge in several sectors, aiming at the increase of economic, social and cultural development.
The programme of the Doctorate degree in Atlantic Island has three different fields of expertise: Historical and Social Dynamics; Cultural Heritage, and Legal and Institutional Framework.
This doctorate degree is divided into two components. The first year is dedicated to the curricular component and the last two are focused on the elaboration on an original thesis.

Graduates will be able to: carry out duties linked to research and teaching in Higher Education; carry out duties linked to research within the scope of institutions and research centres.

Candidates

Eligible applicants must have a master's degree or a legal equivalent; hold an undergraduate degree or a relevant school or scientific curriculum recognized by the members of the Scientific Council.
