Overall objectives:

1 - Understand the current geographical distribution of the Portuguese lexicon all over the world: accounting for its unity and diversity; taking into account the contact with other languages in various historical, geographical and socio-cultural contexts;
2 - Apply concepts and methods of Lexicon study characteristic of a region, society or culture, in its relation with the Portuguese standard and popular varieties, including the European, the Brazilian, the African and the Asian;
3 - Investigate the origin, history and geographical path of a word or set of words and the evolution or change in its form and meaning in the Portuguese-speaking space;
4 - Get to know written and oral corpora in the Portuguese in use on different geographical regions of Lusophony;
5 - Consolidate the lexicographic methodology, from the knowledge and contrast of several dictionaries and vocabularies of the Portuguese language, noticing the systematization and structuring of lexical entries.

Evaluation Methodology:
Teaching methodology consists essentially of the discussion of articles or scientific research papers in the lexical area; Empirical collection of dialectal and sociocultural lexical data; Comparison of empirical data with different dictionaries and vocabularies of the Portuguese Language and individual research work supervision. Assessment: Individual written work (50%) and oral presentation (50%), to be presented in the last sessions of the course unit. Evaluation criteria: - structured preparation of a work plan; - work structure and originality of the research theme; - autonomous capacity to investigate and deepen the subject; - clarity, correctness and adequacy of concepts and of written communication following the scientific methodology; - critical reflection on the methodology of work and discussion of the research outcome.
