Overall objectives:

1 - Acquire knowledge about the Portuguese education system, its organization and its administration.
2 - Understand the organizational structure of the school.
3 - Analyze the competences of the various organs at the different levels of school organization.
4 - Analyze the school as an organization according to various lenses or metaphors.
5 - Recognize the School Educational Project as a guiding mechanism of educational action and know the various stages of its construction, development and evaluation.
6 - Evaluate the importance of the School Educational Project under important concepts such as autonomy and decentralization.
7 - Know the main legislation related to the education system, school management and teachers.

1 - INTRODUCTION: ORGANIZATIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE ANALYSIS OF SCHOOL
1.1 - Concept and nature of organizations.
1.2 - Concept of administration and administrative functions.
1.3 - The school as an organization.
2 - GENERAL THEORIES OF SCHOOL ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION: APPLICATION TO SCHOOL SERVICES.
2.1 - Management theories and organizational approaches to school.
2.2 - The classic theories.
2.3 - The modern theories.
3 - ORGANIZATIONAL ANALYSIS OF SCHOOL THROUGH ITS IMAGES
3.1 - The school seen by different metaphors (The School as Company; The School as Democracy; The School as Bureaucracy; The School as Political Arena; The School as Anarchy; The School as Culture).
4 - SCHOOL ORGANIZATION AND EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION: THE AUTONOMY OF SCHOOLS
4.1 - Autonomy and decentralization: concepts.
4.2 - School Educational Project (PEE).
4.3 - Fundamental legislation: Basic Law of the Educational System, Autonomy Regime, Teaching Career Statute, Teacher Evaluation, etc.

Assesssment methods and criteria:

Evaluation Methodology:
We use diverse and mixed methodologies. We will resort to slide projection, reading scientific articles and other texts and their analysis in pairs, group and plenary. It is always encouraged the sharing of knowledge and analysis of scientific literature and the life stories. The students? evaluation is based on direct observation of their participation in all activities taken place in the class and basically on the production of an pair written work (an interview to a school leader), with the structure of a scientific paper, with its oral presentation in class and to be submitted by email in .DOC format with a minimum of 20 pages and a maximum of 25 (one and a half space and Times 12, excluding cover, summary and abstract). Furthermore, the students will be asked to prepare an individual oral presentation on a topic of their choosing. In the event of any work does not prove consistency against the objectives of the course, the author will be invited to reformulate it.
