Overall objectives:
1 - This course aims to give the student an overview of the area of biomedicine. The student should have an idea of the scope of this area and its multi and interdisciplinary character, as well as become aware of the ethical issues that may arise and the future possibilities in this scientific field. The skills/competencies to be developed include the ability to study autonomously, critical thinking, teamwork, the search/use of scientific information, and the communication of science in written and oral form.
Syllabus:
1 - This curricular unit has a fixed syllabus taught by UMa faculty and a variable component that corresponds to seminars given by Ph.D. researchers working at UMa or visiting professors/researchers. 1) Fixed component: Stem cells and cell therapies. Tissue Engineering. Gene Therapy. Nanomedicine. Ethical issues in biomedicine. 2) Variable component (possible seminar themes): Immunology. Neurosciences. Metabolic diseases. Virology. Bioinformatics. Toxicology. Genetic engineering.

Evaluation Methodology:
This curricular unit comprises 32 hours of theoretical lectures, 16 hours of theoretical-practical classes, and 16 hours of seminars. The theoretical classes /seminars will be accompanied by multimedia projection; during classes/seminars, the teacher/researcher will promote discussions with and among students. Theoretical-practical classes will include problem-solving (group work) and discussions around representative examples related to the covered topics. The evaluation of this course consists of: a) 1 written test, to assess the knowledge and skills acquired individually by each student (50% weight for the global assessment); b) 1 monography on a specific topic in biomedicine, with oral presentation (25% weight for the global assessment); c) 1 presentation of a scientific paper on one of the topics covered by the lectures or seminars (25% weight for the global assessment).
