Subject: Statistics I
Scientific Area:
Mathematics
Workload:
56 Hours
Number of ECTS:
6 ECTS
Language:
Portuguese
Overall objectives:
O1 - The students must be able to interpret statistical information, whether of a general nature or a more specific of the area.
O2 - They must learn some traditional techniques used in statistical inference such as confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.
O3 - Deal with some situations where the use of parametric methods is not adequate.
Syllabus:
P1 - Statistical models: 1.1 Probability distributions for: 1.1.1 discrete variables: binomial and Poisson; 1.1.2 continuous variables: normal, Student's t and chi-squared.
P2 - Statistical Inference: 2.1 Estimator and estimate. 2.2 Confidence intervals for one proportion, for the mean value of a population and for the variance. 2.3 Confidence intervals for the difference of proportions and mean values.
P3 - Parametric hypothesis tests: 3.1 Null and alternative hypothesis. First and 2nd species error. Power of a test. 3.2 Testing for one proportion, for the mean value and for variance. 3.3 Testing for differences in proportions, in mean values and for ratios of variances.
P4 - Nonparametric tests: Chi-squared goodness-of-fit test, test for independence and for homogeneity.

Assesssment methods and criteria:
Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)
Evaluation Methodology:
M1. The theoretical classes are of expository type (using the computer and the projector) although students can intervene whenever they need. M2. The theoretical/practical classes are designed essentially to solve the proposed exercises, with the help of the calculator and of the statistical software SPSS. M3. The evalution is based on the average of two tests. In case of failure, any of the tests can be recovered in "Época de Recurso".
