Overall objectives:

1 - Recognize and understand key facts and protagonists of European art, from the nineteenth century to the first quarter of the twentieth century, and its relations with the Portuguese context.
2 - Analyse the technical and aesthetic, characteristics of each period and main regions, depending on the physical, social, cultural, political, economic and religious realities.
3 - Participate actively in the debate about the motivations and functions of art, the factors (material and intellectual) and the constraints of their historical development.
4 - Develop research within the historiography of art.

Syllabus:

1 - Introduction to Research in Art History
2 - The 19th Century:
2.1 - Neoclassicism and Romanticism. From historicism to revolution.
2.2 - Realism, Impressionism and photography. Searching for visual reality.
3 - The Belle Èpoque (18801910):
3.1 - Symbolism and Post- Impressionism. Breakthrough times
3.2 - The boom of the avantgarde. Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism, Fauvism and Orphism.
4 - From abstract art to oneiric art (19101925)
4.1 - Lyrical and geometric abstractionism. Construtivism and Bauhaus.
4.2 - The oneiric and antiart trend: metaphysical art, Dadaism and Surrealism.

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
Combination of the following methods: - Expository and explanatory method. - Dialogic method. - Active approach. Evaluation Methodology: 1- Periodic evaluation: two mini-teste throughout the semester (50%) and two short oral presentations (40%). - Continuous assessment (10%): attendance, participation in class and extra-class activities throughout the semester.
