Overall objectives:
0 - This curricular unit intends to give approach to multiple definitions about concept of culture in order to provide the students with concepts and theories which allow them to have wide knowledge of covered materials and other targets, such as basic preparation to curricular units of the course of Culture Studies. For this purpose, the students must:
1 - Understand the concept of the word "Culture" opposed to the word "Civilization" in a certain determined period of time and in the cartography.
2 - Understand the elements related to the ambiguity of concept/s of "Culture/s"
3 - Understand how to constitute the Idea/s of Culture/s in the course of time.
4 - Understand the various affected dynamics in the field of Studies of Culture.
5 - Understand the study of the relations between cultural artifacts and society.
Syllabus:
1 - Culture. Cultures. Concepts and theories.
1.1 - Culture versus Civilization,
1.2 - Elements for ambiguity or definition of the word "culture": identification, belonging and differentiation,
1.3 - Universal culture (planetary), national vs local; erudite culture Cultura vs popular and/or mass population; crosscultural phenomena: divergences and convergences.
2 - Culture and contemporaneity.
2.1 - Multiculturalism and minority cultures: collective conscience and logic of distinction,
2.2 - Interculturality. Alterity and cultural identities,
2.3 - Internationalization and /of Culture (globalization, globalization and localisms),
3 - Culture and Society.
3.1 - Public space and cultural practicies
3.2 - Book and other artifacts. Education and Citizenship.

Evaluation Methodology:
In the course of lectures, the curricular unit is to provide students with knowledge in reflecting and debating with a critical thought about the contents of the syllabus. After giving and emphasizing theoretical lectures, the dialog has to be fostered through the interaction between the teacher and students, and also among students, so that it will promote acquisition, understanding and practice of knowledge in framework of the Culture Studies. The discipline is to stimulate the students to carry out research to accomplish data concerning the covered materials, indicating other bibliographical references which do not include in the general bibliography. The contents delivered in the theoretical lectures, both in the theoretical-practical ones, and in seminaries, are subjected to a periodical assessment which constitutes: two tests (50% + 50%).
