Overall objectives:

1 - portuguese economic development in  comparative perspective; the relation of the Portuguese economy with  relevant economic areas (namely European).  To what extent this integration this area interfered in its behavior and evolution. the analysis of the Portuguese economy in relation with specific social and institutional  contexts; the potential and the difficulties of contemporary Portuguese economy. the ability to research using qualitative/quantitative information;
2 - A student should be able to: explore the relationship between the subjects  of the economic history of Portugal with the  ones of other disciplines (history of economic thought and economics);  explore the ability to articulate the historical  subjects studied with the historical context; Use the ability to understand/sumarize arguments from the literature of this course.

Syllabus:

1 - Economic history as the one of the causes of economic growth uses a comparative methodology. 
2 - Namely inserts Portuguese economic growth in the  trends observed in Europe.
3 - It examines the Portuguese economic growth in historical perspective. 
4 - It analyses the main trends of structural transformation  and economic growth in Portugal since the early XIX century until the end of the convergence period of the second post­war (1950­-1973)
5 -  Addresses the importance of the liberalism and starts to characterize the transformations and changes that took place in 1807 to 1851 considering it a turbulent period. As a introduction attention is paid to the main problems faced by Portugal at the end of the XVIIIth century.
6 - Thereafter stresses the institutional modernization and slow growth occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century.
7 - Analyses the Portuguese economy in the first part of the XX century (1914-­1950).
8 - Addresses the structural transformation and economic growth XX after the second world war. 
9 - Characterizes the phenomenon of convergence of the  Portuguese economy between 1950 and 1973.

Evaluation Methodology:
The course will be based on lectures 3 hours per weak(x16=48 hours per week) plus and 2 hours theorical-practical per week (X16=32) dedicated to the presentation and discussion of economic history problems based on journal articles and book chapters and tutorial work (21 hours) with studens concerning compulsory reading materials and written assignements.  The assement will be based on the following items: System A 1.Oral presentation and written summary (25% of the final classification); 2.Written summary plus debate (20%);Participation in the classes debate (10%); 3. Debate particiation 10% 4. One test = 45% 5. Complementary exam = 45%. (4. and 5 student's achievement equal or above ten will be approved); 6.attendance to classes 50% minimum * B System Final Exam of the special shedule and or Complementary exam with achievement equal or above ten will be approved =100%.  *Non-participation in 3 implies the deduction of 10% Improvement exam = B system
