Overall objectives:

1 - General Objectives: This UC will lay the foundational planning and design knowledge necessary to achieve a successful hospitality building. Specific Objectives: Give insights into the evolution of contemporary hotel architectural and interior designs.
2 - Theoretical analysis of hotel design trends through case study discussions of exemplar hotels.
3 - Give insights into the design psychology of interior spaces for hospitality.
4 - Spatial programming of a typical successful hotel including planning insights into front-of-house (public spaces, lobbies, dining areas, bar, outdoor areas, suites) and back-of-house spaces (food preparation, housekeeping, laundary, parking, and supplies).
5 - Planning and design process, tools and techniques for efficient layout of a hotel building.
6 - Anthropometry, human factors, equipment and furniture layout for hotel spaces (front-of-house and back-of-house areas).

Syllabus:

1 - What is profession of hotel architecture and design/ examples of contemporary hotels / insights into architectural themes/ spatial character/ structural solution/ unique elements.
2 - Hotel design trend analysis- construction technology/ façade materials/ front-of-house areas / interior design themes / suite layouts.
3 - Design principles/ successful layout strategies of a hotel suite/ insight into human circulation patterns / spatial cognitive psychology.
4 - Best practices - Illumination/ materials/ furnishing/ furniture /circulation.
5 - Impact of furniture, fittings, and products in the spatial experience.
6 - Case study visits to Madeira exemplar hotels/ capture functioning insights into front & back-of-house areas.
7 - Architectural drawing/modeling tools and techniques.
8 - Normative measurements for furniture/ fittings / equipment/ electrical installations / human and mechanical circulation/ elementary planning and spatial layout standards.

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
1. Teaching Strategy Teaching will be split into theory input, practical assignments, and fieldwork (case studies). The theoretical input will be slide presentations and AV content. Group discussions/ drawing demonstrations will deepen the theoretical knowledge base with a hands-on approach. Interactive teaching technique will encourage the students to make impromptu discussions and offer personal insights on the lesson subject matter. 2. Evaluation Evaluation Model 'C' is followed 3. Components: Continuous: Class participation, proactive contribution, attendance, and process demonstration. Discreet: Class assignments/demonstration of skill applying theoretical knowledge. 4. Component Weightages: Continous: Attendance + class participation = 20% (75% presence obligatory) Discreet: Practical assignments+ fieldwork (case studies) = 80% 5. Recurso/ Melhoria Exam Policy This component is 30% of the final grade calculation: A presentation / assignment / or combination of the two elements.
