Overall objectives:

1 - French A1.1 is for the Breakthrough or Beginner Level according to "The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment" (2000: 25). It requires the understanding and the use of daily expressions to satisfy the students need in basic communication. The learner can interact in a simple way, ask and answer simple questions about themselves, where they live, people they know, and things they have, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics. The objectives of this level are:
1.1 - to develop the language/linguistic competence through a guided and systematic learning of the French morphosyntax, as a foreign language.
1.2 - to develop student?s autonomy to observe the language as well as its communicative practice.
1.3 - to develop general competences: ?savoir?; ?savoir-faire?; ?savoir-être?; ?savoir-apprendre?.
1.4 - Promote research and writing skills;
1.5 - To promote student?s interaction through pair/group work

2.2 - Progressive vocabulary of French
3 - BASIC GRAMMAR
3.1 - Definite and indefinite articles
3.2 - Subject pronouns
3.3 - Pronouns and possessives
3.4 - Present tense (?être?; ?avoir?; verbs ending in ?-er?)
3.5 - Verbs in ?-er? in the present tense
3.6 - Three forms of sentences: affirmative, negative and interrogative
3.7 - Prepositions (à/de + noms de pays)
3.8 - Determiners
3.9 - Adjectives
3.10 - Verbs ?aller?, ?venir?, ?faire? and ?dire? in the present tense

Classification Type: Quantitative (0-20) Evaluation methodology: Classes are of the expositive, theoretical-practical type where lecturer-student-lecturer interaction is predominant. During class students will develop their oral production as well as their written work in French, both through individual work and pair work (presentations, dialogues and simulation of situations ? ?Jeu de rôle?). Students are also asked to use different sources of information (manuals; magazines; music; articles). In terms of assessment, Assessment - Type A was chosen from the Assessment Regulation of Madeira University. The evaluation typology is continuous and the elements to be considered and their percentages are: 50% - Written tests (2x25%) 20% - Oral presentation 30% - Classroom activities: oral and written participation; individual /group work; reading; attendance)
