Overall objectives:
1 - At the end of the semester, students should be able to: Recognize and understand key facts and protagonists of the historical development of art and design, from ancient past to the beginning of twentieth century, and its relations with the Portuguese context.
2 - Analyze the conceptual and aesthetic characteristics of each period , depending on the physical, social, cultural, political and economic realities.
3 - Participate actively in the debate about the role of designers in society, well as of the importance of design methodology.
4 - Develop research within the theory and history of design.
Syllabus:
1 - 1. Design before design: brief overview.
1.1 - The Renaissance: Leonardo da Vinci and drawing as project. Gutenberg and printing press.
1.2 - The Baroque style, the rocaille style and luxury.
1.3 - Styles and aesthetics of Neoclassicism and Romanticism (revival and historicism).
2 - The nineteenth century: Industrial Revolution and birth of design (1860-1920).
2.1 - William Morris and the Arts & Crafts movement.
2.2 - Art nouveau style and Symbolist aesthetics.
2.3 - The Deutscher Werkbund.
3 - The twentieth century: The boom of the avant-garde.
3.1 - Cubism, expressionis and The School of Paris.
3.2 - Suprematism, Constructivism and De Stijl movement.
3.3 - The Bauhaus School

Evaluation Methodology:
Combination of the following methods: - Expository and explanatory method. - Dialogic method. - Active approach. 1 - Periodic assessment: through quizzes and presentation of papers (50%). 2 - Continuous assessment: attendance and (40%) class participation (10%).
