Overall objectives:

1 - Promote critical reflection on the Portuguese Contemporary Culture (CPC) 1.1. Shape the origins, nature and evolution of the CPC
2 - Develop the capacity for reflection on contemporary issues
3 - Get methodological tools of research and analysis
4 - Identify and address some of the main issues of CPC, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
5 - Highlight the constant and power lines, through a focus on cultural, social, institutional and even economics analysis
6 - Define and demonstrate the importance of historical and cultural knowledge in the analysis andunderstanding of the present 6.1 Know and understand the complexity of the Portuguese cultural system
7 - Reflect on the implications in research applications

Syllabus:

1 - From the end of the Old Regime to liberal Portugal: changes and permanences 1.1. The political and socio-cultural reality. The roots of the liberal idea. 1.2. The exiles. Portuguese romanticism. The Theater and the People. The press.
2 - From decay to the fall of the Monarchy 2.1. Brief overview of cultural trends at the end of the 19th century. The ideas of Progress and Decay in a historical perspective: Antero de Quental, Eça de Queiroz and Oliveira Martins. The (anti-) clerical issue. 2.2. Nationalism and the cult of great men. The Celebration and the Party. New collective attitudes and behaviors: parties, unions and other movements.
3 - The First Portuguese Republic 3.1. Portuguese republicanism. Between tradition and modernity: ideas for reform. 3.2. Antiliberal nationalist culture: personalities, groups and movements. Liberalism, Integralism, Autoritarism, Communism and Fascism.
4 - The "Estado Novo" ("New State") 4.1. Salazarism. The intellectuals and the mechanisms of representation and propaganda. 4.2. History and Culture on radio, cinema and television
5 - Democratic Portugal 5.1. Destination and national identity? The mythical deconstruction and the reinvention of the country. 5.2. Culture (s) at liberty: practices and policies; changing values and mentalities. New spaces and platforms.
6 - Madeira in Contemporary Portuguese Culture 6.3. Identity, Memory and Autonomy.

Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)

Evaluation Methodology:
The methodology is focused on the presentation and discussion of the syllabus. Moreover, from texts, students should know how to develop argumentative skills through interventions in the classroom and prepare for the written and oral assessments. Are also invited to seek information to increase the level of knowledge about them contents that are analyzed in class. The assessment consists of the combination of two tests, with value of 40% + 40% of the assessment for the application of skills related to writing and presence and efective participation in the classroom sessions (20%).
