Subject: Statistics for Social Sciences
Scientific Area:
Mathematics
Workload:
64 Hours
Number of ECTS:
6 ECTS
Language:
Portuguese
Overall objectives:
1 - O1 - Be able to use the knowledge acquired in this UC to display the relevant information contained in a collection of statistical data, i.e., use the appropriate techniques for presentation of summary statistics and construction of graphs.
2 - O2 - Develop the ability to interpret statistical information in the day-to-day, whether of general type, present in the media or specific of the respective area.
3 - O3 - Solve problems of statistical inference, either through confidence intervals or through hypothesis testing.
Syllabus:
1 - Descriptive statistics: location and dispersion measures; graphic representation of qualitative and quantitative data; symmetry and asymmetry.
2 - Some concepts of probability theory
3 - Probability distributions: binomial, Poisson, normal, t-Student and chi-square.
4 - Statistical inference: parameter estimation (proportion, mean and variance); confidence interval estimation; hypothesis testing.

Assesssment methods and criteria:
Classification Type: Quantitativa (0-20)
Evaluation Methodology:
M1 - The lectures are mostly expository (using the computer and the projector) although students may intervene to post their questions. M2 - The theoretical/practical classes are designed for students to solve the proposed exercises. However, as far as possible, taking into account the number of students, there is an individual supervision followed by a general explanation. M3 - The evaluation in this UC is constituted by two tests, each one with a weight of 50%. In case of failure, there is an exam, which allows the recovery of the evaluation of one or two tests.
