Overall objectives:
0 - Students are expected to be able to:
1 - Master the main spectroscopic techniques needed to determine the structure of organic compounds;
2 - Interpret compound spectra in the field of ultraviolet/visible, infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry;
3 - Recognize the tables with the spectroscopic data necessary for the structural elucidation of organic compounds
4 - Treat information from the various spectroscopic methods and analyze the spectral data for structural determination.
Syllabus:
1 - Introduction to structural analysis.
2 - Application of the main techniques for the identification of organic molecules and biomolecules: Ultraviolet Spectroscopy / Visible; Infrared Spectroscopy; Mass spectrometry; NMR spectroscopy.

Evaluation Methodology:
The course has a theoretical component (32 hours) and a theoretical-practical component (32 hours). The theoretical component is prepared as lectures using slide projection (PowerPoint) and the board. Theoretical-practical classes are designed to solve and discuss a wide set of exercises in an exercise chart prepared and provided to students at the beginning of the course. The assessment of this course consists of an evaluation form made after the first three chapters have been taught: 35%;- a final knowledge assessment test covering the whole subject: 50%;- Continuous assessment during the classes: 15%.
